Hashmasks
"Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea... and ideas are bulletproof"
I was unsure about writing on Hashmasks for the journal. It doesn’t really fit the “trading” category.
But I figured that, in crypto, we are in an amalgamation of trading, investing, purchasing for love, taste or ideology, so why not?
Hashmasks are collectibles, just like CryptoPunks. There will be 16,384 unique Hashmasks, and the sale price for them starts at 0.1 ETH for the initial 3k (already sold, currently 0.3) and goes up all the way to 100 ETH for the last 3.
Each Hashmask has distinctive characteristics. Character, Mask, Eye Color, Item, Skin Color. And the aesthetics of them is really intriguing.
But what makes Hashmasks more interesting is that when you buy, you don’t know what you’ll get. In fact, they will be revealed in 14 days, and we will also know how rare each trait is.
Another additional layer of scarcity in the game is the fact you can name your Hashmask. Name seems to be really valuable as well, just like domain names, so you want to pick a good name (Hashmask 0# was named Bitcoin, and already acquired). The name can be changed, and the mechanics for that you can check on their website.
I bought a few Hashmasks at the initia price (0.1 per mask plus crazy expensive gas). I’ve named a few of them with crypto-related names. For the others, I’ll wait for the reveal to see what I’m getting, and maybe fit a name to a mask. And I’ll keep some masks virgin.
Collectible games are a category that I was not really paying attention to until I understood CryptoPunks. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that:
If there’s something truly unique about the collectible — distribution model, historical context, brand — it can be valuable. This is the case for CryptoPunks
In the end, it’s valuable by social consensus. More people playing the game makes the game more valuable.
I believe Hashmasks fits well both categories, judging by the reaction of the people I ended up suggesting to play the game.
I may sell some just to get back the initial investment and some profit, but I may hold on to most of them.
